Matrescence Support. Motherhood journey, supporting mum's wellbeing, flower essences

Matrescence Support

The term matrescence is used to describe the transition or process that women go through when they become a mother – whether that is through pregnancy, surrogacy or adoption.

It is not a common phrase, but perhaps one we need to talk about more and honour as a milestone in the lifetime of a woman.

Motherhood changes us in so many ways – physical, emotional and spiritual at a very deep level. The process of becoming a mum is actually like a metamorphosis! It is one of the most beautiful, profound things we can experience in our lives as well as one of the most challenging.

‘Becoming a mother’ doesn’t just happen upon conception or once the baby has arrived. It’s a process of evolution, continually growing and developing qualities such as unconditional love, wisdom, boundary setting, patience, inner strength and so much more!

Generally mothers do not get a whole lot of support as the role of mothers is not valued highly in our society. Hopefully this will change as we start to honour ourselves as mothers and acknowledge the importance of this role.

We may sometimes feel like we are failing at motherhood as it can be incredibly challenging at times. I would like to remind you that our children chose us and we are the perfect mother for them and their unique soul journey. So, even though at times we might falter and feel overwhelmed, please know that we are never given anything we don’t have the strength to handle.

Trusting your own intuition when it comes to motherhood is possibly one of the best things you can do. You and your children have a special connection so trust in that. Did you know that foetal cells migrate into the mother during pregnancy? We really do hold our children in our heart.

Flower Essences to support motherhood

Flower essences can help support the range of emotions that come with mothering!

Mother Being – this exquisite flower essence is a new formulation, inspired by the term ‘matrescence’ meaning the process of becoming a mother. Mother Being can assist with the growth and development in areas of intuition, wisdom and love, while encouraging the growth and development of the woman within.

Bringing together three flower essence blends that can have a profound impact on the pregnant woman as she prepares to give birth, and cares for her newborn.  These blends support the woman to be guided by her intuition, make decisions that are right for her and her baby, and feel confident through this process.

Rocket Fuel – this essence is good for those mums who are feeling a bit burnt out, resentful and run down. It can help with renewing energy, inner peace and slowing down and being present.

Calm Your Farm – this essence is useful for stressful and chaotic situations and can help support feelings of calmness, grounding, patience and understanding.

The essence of the Boab flower has connections to releasing family patterns that are susceptible to being repeated. This can be helpful for mothers who wish to forge their own path or avoid mistakes made by their mother. You can find Boab essence in Breastfeeding Support and Good Vibrations or I can make you a personalised essence to address your own unique needs.

Homeopathy to support motherhood

There are several homeopathic remedies that mothers may find useful at various stages of parenting.

Cocculus – this remedy is useful for those mothers experiencing exhaustion from lack of sleep or from caring for others.

Sepia – this homeopathy remedy is good for women who are worn down, exhausted, irritable, indifferent and wish to be left alone.

Ignatia – typically used in cases of emotional upsets such as grief and hysteria, but also can be helpful during times of mental and emotional strain, or if there is an element of sadness.

Pulsatilla – indicated when the person is clingy, moody, weepy and desiring company and consolation.

Natural Remedies to support motherhood

The journey of motherhood is easier when we have support from other mothers. So join a mother’s group, chat to your friends, ask for help from the women in your family and get some counselling anytime you need it!

You can also research further to seek a deeper understanding of matrescence. Amy Taylor-Kabbaz has a great book, podcast and programs focusing on the motherhood transition.

Motherhood requires us to be healthy and fit to keep up the demands of parenting, so the basics of good nutrition, exercise, rest, sleep and stress management are crucial for mums. Self-care is incredibly important so we have the capacity to care for our children. Many of us can get caught up in the demands of motherhood and we can sacrifice our own wellbeing at times.

Taking time for ourselves is also important. Give yourself space to nurture yourself and recharge on a regular basis. Daily practices like breathwork, journaling and meditation can all help centre us and create a calm, grounded place to start or finish the day.

What has supported you in the transition to matrescene? I would love to know.
